Why exercise to lose weight?
Two reasons:
1) Muscle burns more calories than fat.
2) The body keeps burning fat long after a workout.
Additional advantages are mood elevation, improved bowel movement frequency and increased disease resistance.
a) With working out with loose weights, results become evident after some three weeks' working out, three times a week, an hour per session. Use small weights and high repetitions. Get a friend experienced in working out to teach you the safe way of exercising. Results usually become apparent after only three weeks. But first seek your doctor's advice!
There is the misconception that with weight training, people put on weight that they cannot later shed. Weight gain with weight training is accomplished by arduous workouts with heavy weights, relatively low repetitions and tons of food. Unfortunately, many of those who stop working out continue to eat in excess. I do not endorse any of this.
b) It is well known that long distance runners are incredibly slim. A goal of 10 miles a day, six days a week will show results. Avoid pavements and hard surfaces (as they will end up damaging your legs and back) in favour of natural ground.
The above are just examples. It is however essential that you choose an exercise regimen that you enjoy; otherwise you will not keep at it.
